INTRODUCTION — WE NEED GOD’S WORD TO UNDERSTAND GOD’S WAYS
Once more, welcome to each one of you this evening. Thank you for your time, your attendance, and your expectation to hear from the Word of God.
We are continuing to understand the paradox of the Christian life. A paradox is something that may appear contradictory or unreasonable from our limited point of view, yet becomes clear when we see it from God’s perspective.
To understand this world and the spiritual battle in which we live, we must look to God’s Word. There we find the direction, counsel, and unchanging principles that He has established for all time. Isaiah 55:1–13 gives us powerful examples of truths that do not naturally fit human reasoning: the thirsty are satisfied without money, life comes by listening, God’s thoughts are higher than ours, His Word produces fruit, and His people can go out with joy even through difficult circumstances.
I. GOD FREELY INVITES US TO COME — ISAIAH 55:1–7
A. Come and Be Satisfied — Verses 1–2
The opening of Isaiah 55 is often described as the free offer of mercy. Through Hebrew poetry, God gives us vivid pictures of the character and glory of our Creator, Savior, and Sustainer.
In verse 1, thirsty people are invited to come to the waters. Those who have no money are still invited to come, buy, and eat. We do not purchase God’s favor or satisfy Him with money. In His presence, He freely satisfies the thirsty and hungry soul.
Verse 2 asks why we spend our resources on things that cannot satisfy. Human beings invest time, strength, attention, and money in many things that promise life but leave the soul empty. God calls us to listen carefully to Him and to delight our innermost being in His abundance.
B. Listen, Come, and Live — Verse 3
God says, “Incline your ear.” We are to listen carefully—not merely hearing sounds, but responding with our lives. True listening moves our feet: “Come to Me.” If we want to be alive spiritually, we must hear so that our soul may live.
Why should we listen to God and His Word? Because He makes an everlasting covenant. He gives unbreakable promises to those who come to Him in faith. God’s promises are more than words. They are faithful expressions of His lovingkindness, supported by His character and fulfilled by His actions.
