The Greatness of Our Salvation in Christ

Introduction: Learning So We Can Teach Others

Good evening to each one of you. I welcome you in the name of the Lord.

As we begin, I encourage each of you to have your Bible open, and also to have a pen and paper ready. Do not only listen with your ears. Follow along with your eyes. Write down what you learn. You will remember more, understand more, and be better prepared to share these truths with others.

Today we want to continue studying the greatness of our salvation.

But before we continue in 1 Peter chapter 1, I want us to remember the purpose of this online ministry. Please turn with me to 2 Timothy 2:1-2.

The apostle Paul is encouraging Timothy, a young pastor. But these inspired words are not only for Timothy. God speaks through these words to us today.

Paul tells Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. Then he tells him that the things he has heard must be committed to faithful people who will be able to teach others also.

This is very important. The goal of these messages is not only that we would be instructed. The goal is not only that we would be edified. The goal is that we would learn God’s truth, live God’s truth, and then teach God’s truth to others.

We are not here only to receive. We are here to be prepared to serve.

Part of our responsibility is to identify faithful men and women who can also teach others. I trust that because you are participating, you have an interest to learn, to grow, and to be used by God in ministry.

So I encourage you: be active in your attention. Keep your Bible open. Listen carefully. Think deeply. Write down what God is teaching you.

It is my prayer that the truth comes from my lips. But dear brothers and sisters, I am no one special. We all have the Word of God. My desire is simply to help you see the truth in your Bible so that you can understand it, rejoice in it, live it, and teach it to others.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I ask You to guard our spirits, open our eyes, and instruct our hearts.

Thank You for each person present. We gather together as the body of Christ, looking to our Head, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

I pray that Your Spirit would instruct us, bless us, and glorify Your name. Help us to grow and mature in Your grace, in Your power, and in the knowledge of Your presence.

What You teach us, help us to teach others also. Help us to find other faithful men and women, so that Your Word may continue to be taught from one generation of believers to another.

Guide us now in Your Word, and help us appreciate the greatness of our salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

1. We Have Been Born Again by the Living Word of God

Please turn now to 1 Peter 1:23.

Peter tells us that believers have been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible seed, through the Word of God which lives and abides forever.

This verse tells us something very important about the nature of our salvation. Our salvation begins by the work of God. By grace, through faith in Jesus Christ, we are born again. This is not merely a religious improvement. It is not simply learning Christian ideas. It is not becoming part of a church culture. It is new life from God.

Peter uses the picture of a seed. A seed has life within it. When it is planted, it puts roots down, it begins to grow, and eventually new life becomes visible.

In the same way, the Word of God is living and powerful. God uses His living Word to bring spiritual life.

Our salvation is not based on human feelings. Our salvation is not based on emotions that rise and fall. Our salvation is not based on religious customs or traditions. Our salvation is based on the character of God and the promises of His living and enduring Word.

Peter calls this Word incorruptible. That means it cannot rot. It cannot decay. It cannot be destroyed. It cannot lose its power. It cannot fail.

Everything in this world is corruptible. It breaks. It rusts. It grows old. It fades. It dies.

But the Word of God lives and abides forever. That means our salvation rests on something eternal, not temporary. It rests on God’s Word, not man’s opinion. It rests on God’s promise, not our emotions.

2. We Have Been Redeemed from an Empty Life

Now look earlier in the same chapter, 1 Peter 1:18-19.

Peter reminds us that we were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

To understand the greatness of our salvation, we must understand the word redeemed.

Redemption means that freedom has been bought and paid for. It means someone has been rescued from bondage, danger, or slavery by the payment of a price.

In New Testament times, people understood slavery very well. Human beings were bought and sold. A slave did not belong to himself. He belonged to his owner. He was not free to live as he wanted. His present and future were controlled by another.

Spiritually speaking, this was our condition before Christ. We were enslaved by sin.

Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

• We are sinners by nature.
• We are sinners by choice.
• We are sinners by habit.

Before Christ, sin was not only something we occasionally did. Sin dominated us. It ruled us. It controlled our desires, our thoughts, and our direction. Our sinful nature, our passions, our lusts, our pride, and our rebellion carried us from one sin to another.

Some people try to escape this bondage through religion. Some serve idols. Some try to earn God’s favor. Some trust rituals. Some trust good works. Some believe they can influence karma or improve their future after death.

But these ideas cannot rescue the soul.

This is not only a problem in India. This is not only a problem in one culture or one religion. This is the problem of all humanity. All people are sinners before a holy God.

Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death. What we earn through sin is separation from God. Humanity is enslaved, guilty, and unable to free itself.

But then the glory of the gospel appears.

3. Christ Paid the Price with His Precious Blood

Peter says we were redeemed, not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.

Gold and silver may seem valuable to men, but they are corruptible. They belong to this temporary world. They cannot cleanse sin. They cannot rescue the soul. They cannot satisfy the justice of a holy God.

Men in spiritual darkness often make idols from gold, silver, wood, or stone. They shape something with their own hands and then bow before it. They think it will help them reach God or represent God.

But the true and living God has warned mankind again and again: do not trust the works of your own hands. Idols cannot see. They cannot hear. They cannot breathe. They cannot speak. They cannot save.

Our salvation is not based on something made by human hands. Our salvation is based on the finished work of the living Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jesus came to the place of our slavery. He came to the place of our guilt. He came to the place of our death. And He paid the price we could never pay.

Romans 5:8 says that God demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus did not wait for us to become worthy. He did not wait for us to repair ourselves. He did not wait for us to climb up to God. He came down to rescue us.

Luke 19:10 says that the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.

Jesus Christ gave His own life. He shed His own blood. He paid the debt of our sin before a holy and just God.

• We were bought back.
• We were rescued.
• We were transferred to a new Master.
• We now belong to Jesus Christ.

He takes sinners, washes them, forgives them, gives them life, and makes them His own.

4. Christ Is the Spotless Lamb of God

Peter describes Jesus as a lamb without blemish and without spot. This connects the whole Bible together.

In the Old Testament, God taught His people that sin required a sacrifice. The lamb had to be without blemish. It had to be acceptable. It had to die in the place of another.

Those sacrifices pointed forward to Jesus Christ.

When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he said in John 1:29, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Jesus is the true Lamb of God.

• He is spotless.
• He is sinless.
• He is perfect.
• He is the Son of God.
• He is the only acceptable sacrifice.
• He is our substitute.

He died in the place of sinners.

This is why we do not preach a dead religion. We preach a living Savior. Jesus died, but He did not remain dead. He rose again. He is alive forever.

• Our salvation is incorruptible because our Savior is alive.
• Our salvation is secure because His sacrifice was perfect.
• Our salvation is great because the price was His own precious blood.

5. Salvation Is More Than Religion

The Christian life is more than attending church. It is more than owning a Bible. It is more than being baptized. It is more than learning Christian words.

True salvation means that we have come to know the living Savior. Jesus Christ forgives our sins, washes our hearts, renews our minds, and transforms our lives.

This is why Jesus said we must be born again. We do not need only external religion. We need new life from above.

I pray that each one of you has truly experienced this relationship with Jesus Christ.

• Have you come to Him personally?
• Have you confessed your sin before Him?
• Have you trusted His blood as the payment for your sin?
• Have you received Him as your Savior and Lord?
• Are you following Him?

Do not rest in religion. Do not rest in tradition. Do not rest in knowledge alone. Do not rest in the fact that you attend Christian meetings.

Come to Christ. Trust Christ. Follow Christ.

• He alone can forgive sin.
• He alone can wash the soul.
• He alone can give eternal life.
• He alone can rescue us from sin and death.

6. Redeemed People Must Become Witnesses

Once Christ has rescued us, He calls us to represent Him. We are not saved only so that we can be safe. We are saved so that we can serve.

We are called to tell others who Jesus is and what He has done.

We must explain to others how Jesus rescues sinners from sin and death. We must tell them that He is the Lamb of God. We must tell them that He shed His blood. We must tell them that He rose again. We must tell them that forgiveness is found in Him.

This is why 2 Timothy 2:2 is so important.

• We learn so that we can teach.
• We receive so that we can give.
• We are strengthened so that we can strengthen others.

The more we investigate our salvation, the greater it becomes in our hearts. The more we understand what Christ has done, the more we should worship Him, love Him, obey Him, and proclaim Him.

This is the greatest news the world has yet to hear. And we are called to take that news to others.

I must be careful to say this: I am not only preaching to you. I am preaching to myself also. We are all called.

• All of us together must be faithful to Christ.
• All of us together must continue in His Word.
• All of us together must teach others also.

Conclusion: Give Thanks for Our Great Salvation

Dear brothers and sisters, our salvation is great because it comes from a great God.

• We have been born again by the living and enduring Word of God.
• We have been redeemed from sin and slavery.
• We have not been bought with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.
• We have been rescued by the spotless Lamb of God.
• We have been brought into a living relationship with the risen Savior.
• And now we have been sent to tell others.

So remain faithful to the Savior. Make sure you have truly come to Him. Keep following Him. Keep learning His Word. Keep teaching others. Find faithful men and women who can teach others also.

May God help us give thanks for the greatness of our salvation in Jesus Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the greatness of our salvation.

Thank You that we were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.

Thank You for sending Your Son, the spotless Lamb of God, to die in our place and rise again.

Help each person here to truly know Christ, follow Christ, and serve Christ. Help us not only to learn Your truth, but to teach it to others.

Make us faithful servants. Make us faithful witnesses. Use us to carry the message of salvation to others who still need to hear.

We thank You for Jesus Christ, our living Savior. In His name we pray, Amen.
